This Biniboo Quiet book Whale I Spy activity page is great for observing, language, and also counting.

You can make this Quiet book Whale I Spy page in the no-sew method, as long as you are willing to make hand-backstitches around the transparent foil.

If you just started planning your quiet book, I suggest you read the Quiet book Guide, where you can find out how to choose the best activity pages for your child and what is the general procedure of making a quiet book.

If you want to use the no-sew method, I kindly suggest reading an article about gluing before you start, to find out if your glue is suitable for making no-sew quiet book activities. Also, do a test and make sure your hot glue doesn’t melt the felt. If you will make a sewn quiet book, make sure you know how to sew felt in quiet books correctly.

QUIET BOOK WHALE I SPY PAGE
NO-SEW & SEWING INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1

If you haven’t already, first, create a fabric page base (sewing method) or felt page base (no-sew method). Download and print the FREE PDF Whale Quiet Book Pattern for this activity and cut out all the shapes. You can find the pattern at the bottom of the page.

Put the paper pieces on a stiff felt, transcribe them, and then cut them out from felt. If you don’t want to waste hours searching for all the materials you need and transcribing and cutting the felt, check my DIY store to buy a pre-cut DIY kit for this activity page.

STEP 2

Align the dark blue felt pieces, representing the whale, and put the transparent foil in between. Clip everything together.

STEP 3

Make two marks with an erasable marker.

STEP 4

No-sew method: Make a hand- backstitch from one mark to the other. Use double thread and make sure you leave enough of the thread to make knots at the beginning and the end of hand-sewing. You can watch a video on how to do the hand-backstitch here (starts 00:45).

How the backstitchng looks at the backside.

Sewing method: Sew around from one mark to the other.

STEP 5

Cut the excess foil. Leave approximately 5 mm (¼ in) from the stitches. And make sure the foil is shorter than the felt edges.

No-sew method: Glue two blue felt parts together, but only on the side where you already made hand-backstitches.

STEP 6

Put the filler and small objects between the foil and the background felt.

STEP 7

No-sew method: Make a hand- backstitch to close the remaining hole.
Sewing method: Sew around the remaining hole.

STEP 8

Cut the excess of the transparent foil.

No-sew method: Glue the rest of the blue felt together.

STEP 9

Glue or sew the whale on the prepared page. Then, glue or sew the light blue whale’s bottom part, the whale fin, and the water squirting out of the whale blowhole.

STEP 10

Glue or sew the blue ribbon on the page.

STEP 11

Glue or sew the sun and two birds on the page.
